The City of Linz

The City of Linz

I arrived in Austria for the first time to visit the city of Linz. I had heard about the beauty and peacefulness of Austria and Vienna, its association with art and music, being well known all over the world for its artists and composers. I did not know what to expect to see in Linz. I knew that Linz was the European Capital of Culture in 2009, a future city that thinks forward. Thanks to this accolade, the city has received a boost, with many new museums which has resulted in many more tourists visiting.

Discover Puglia

Discover Puglia

Puglia, positioned in the heel of Italy’s boot, is a lesser known region to tourists. Puglia or Apulia, which was the Latin name for the region, Italy’s southernmost peninsula, has remained almost untouched by visitors. Its beautiful coastlines, countryside and vast number of historical monuments from the ancient to the medieval period lay waiting for discerning visitors.

Mosadegh House in Ahmadabad

The house of the late Dr Mohammad Mosadegh and his tomb is located in the village of Ahmad Abad near the city of Karaj.

Mosaddegh was a prominent Iranian politician and Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 to 1953. His democratically elected government was overthrown in a coup coordinated by American CIA and British MI6 agents. He was renown because of his policy against foreign domination and support for nationalization of the Iranian oil industry, revoking the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which was imposed on Iran since 1913, exploiting cheap oil and profiting for nearly 40 years.

At the Waterloo re-enactment

Waterloo, in Belgium, is a small town located seventeen kilometres south of Brussels. The town is very close to forests and its name may have originated from the Latin words for ‘water” and “loo”, which literally means wet forest. This unknown, small hamlet in the province of Walloon became a well-known landmark on the world map as a result of the famed battle between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Alliance of the Seventh Coalition formed by the most powerful monarchs of Europe under the command of the Duke of Wellington on 18th June 1815.

Mons: Doudou Festival

Mons: Doudou Festival

The city of Mons transforms into a mass ritual of joy on the weekend of Trinity Sunday during the Doudou festival. The whole city partakes in celebrating Ducasse de Mons. Every corner of the old medieval town leading to the main square is decorated and food and drink stalls are set up to serve the large crowd. The locals, young and old, children and all family members gather in cobbled streets, joined by tourists and people from nearby villages and larger cities such as Brussels. Modern and traditional Belgian music plays loudly from every street. I had never witnessed such a huge celebration in one city.
