Innsbruck: Maximilian I’s legacy

Innsbruck: Maximilian I’s legacy

Innsbruck, as the name implies, is “a bridge over the River Inn,” and has flourished as an important crossing point since the twelfth century. The town was grown around the bridge because, being nestled in the Inn valley, it provided the easiest and fastest transit route across the Alps.

Being such an obvious crossing point, many guesthouses, bars and restaurants were established to serve visitors. It brought large revenues and prosperity to the city and, today, Innsbruck has kept that importance but attuned itself to demands in the modern time in different ways.

Salzburg – Mozart’s birthplace

The city of Salzburg, (it means “Salt Castle”) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the birthplace of Mozart and is the fourth largest city in Austria.

It nestles in the mountainous alpine foreland along the Salzach River. The setting of the old town with stylish medieval architecture and gentle decorative facades has kept the soul of the city tuned like a calm, peaceful musical composition. Salzburg is an attraction not just because of its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, because there is music in the air in every lane and passage, but because of the diverse cultural heritage throughout the city.

Diving in the Philippines

The seas around the Philippines are renowned amongst divers as providing some of the best conditions in the world.

I was going diving in Batangas province in the south of Luzon to check how good it was. Basing myself at the Buceo Anilao Beach & Dive Resort meant a boat journey as there is no road access. At Anileo, there would be three dives in the daytime and one at night.

The resort nestles on a steep lush green hillside to the south of the town of Mabini, approximately 120 kilometres from Manila.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

The Four Seasons Hotel Ritz in Lisbon is a city landmark, standing as it does, pompously on a hilly secluded road in Lisbon city centre near the Avenida de Liberdade, overlooking the Eduardo VII Park and the Marquess of Pombal Square. The hotel’s location is in a quiet part of the city but not too far from the buzz and the excitement of the old town.

Off the Beaten Track in the Philippines

Given that the Philippines archipelago consists of over 7,000 islands spanning 300,000 square kilometers, it’s amazing that these diverse territorial islands form a united country.

The Philippines’ heritage is a combination of natives who once lived in caves, followed much later by a dramatic occupation by the Spanish and then a strong American influence after the Second World War. Surrounded by the seas of China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it is the only Christian state in Southeast Asia.

Restoring the glory of Medina

Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tunisia, is a jewel in the crown of the country. It is a magical maze comprising of layers and layers of cultural integrity and a rich legacy of an ancient civilisation.

The old city of Tunis flourished and developed in the light of Islam at the end of the seventh century in 698, eighty four years after the Hejrat of Holy Prophet Muhammad, when the first stones of the Zitouna Mosque were laid. Over the centuries, the urban quarters and souks have sprouted around the mosque and those early settlers, newly converted Muslims, gathered around the mosque to worship and perform their ritual prayers.
